Meet Shion Miyashita!

Meet Shion Miyashita!

I started kendo when I was 12 years old. I was first introduced to kendo at my junior highschool club in Japan, and only practiced there for 3 months before moving to Edmonton, Alberta. I’ve been practicing in Canada ever since, and have continued to dedicate a huge part of my life to kendo.

The value of kendo to me is building meaningful and lasting relationships. Kendo is a universal language that lets me connect with anyone who does kendo. I’ve built many relationships throughout my kendo journey and those connections have led me to opportunities outside of kendo as well. Being able to create these connections with members of the kendo community across Canada and the world gives me a sense of belonging. I have kendo senseis that became mentors to me, not only teaching me kendo but important values and life skills.

I want to achieve a strong work ethic and resilience towards challenges that are thrown to me. Going through hard Team Canada practices has helped me develop that skill of getting through those challenging moments. I want to develop an unbreakable spirit through kendo.
